Robert Burdass 1891 - 1985 : Application for an Army Commission
Original handwritten letter from Great Central Railway to Mr R. Burdass 2.2.1917 confirming completion of application for an Army Commission.
Further research by Hilary Atkinson confirms that Robert Burdass was Railway Clerk who moved to Marple from Lincoinshire worked at the Great Central Railway. Involved in the demolition of Stone Row in 1938 (see RHI/01/06)
He became a Company Quartermaster Sergent in the Royal Army Service Corps and received the British War Medal and Victory Media.

Detention of German national
Photocopy and typed transcript of a newspaper cutting from 1914. It describes the detention of a German civilian, who had been resident and working as a baker in Marple for several years previously. He was taken to Queensferry Detention Camp near Chester.

Newspaper cuttings relating to Forces Personnel from Marple including :<br /><br />2001 - James Freeman : WW2 Soldier who wrote book "To Alamein and Back" recounting his military experiences from 1940 onwards;<br /> <br />2004 - Chris Finney : received George Cross for Bravery in rescuing injured comrades under fire in Iraq in 2002, at age of 18. Finney himself injured in the incident and became country's youngest recipient of GC. Also made Honorary Freeman of the Borough by Stockport Council; <br /><br />2007 - Wayne Ayres' return home after seven months' duty in Iraq as reconnaissance tank driver;<br /><br />2009 - Danny Winter (1908 - 2009): Royal Marine killed in explosion while on joint operations with Danish forces and Afghan National Army. Mission was to clear known Taliban stronghold in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
