Barthmolomew Booth : Research material & correspondence
Correspondence with Maurice Whitehead of Hull University 1988 into the Booth family history 1732 - 1785 USA. Research material includes family trees, a transcribed letter (July 1789) and associated documents.<br /><br />Bartholomew Booth Senior was schoolmaster at Mellor School in 1713. Booth Junior was born in Mellor, attended Oxford University after Manchester Grammar School and became ordained priest at Disley (1758). Taught in Derby, Liverpool and Essex before leaving for Maryland, where he established an academy in 1779 which attracted the sons of many Revolutionaries.<br />

Typed 2 page document entitled "Bartholomew Booth (1732 - 1785)" Supplied by M Whithead, University of Hull. Chronology history of life from birth at Mellor to death in USA.<br /><br />Ordained priest by Bishop of Chester 1758 : Licenced to Disley Chapel as Assistant Curate; 1760 Master of Disley School and curate of Marple; resigned from Marple curacy 1761. Separated from his wife, settling annuity on her. <br /><br />Thereafter held posts in Derby, Liverpool and Essex before moving to Maryland in USA where he bought extensive estates (with financial assistance from housekeepers) and established an academy.<br /><br />Booth was one of few Anglican clergy allowed to exercise his ministry during the Revolution and attracted sons of a large number of revolutionaries to his Academy.
