1841 statistics not entirely reliable, but professional class put at four people.

1851 Mentions made of Mary Isherwood (Marple Hall), John Wright (Brabyns Hall), Betty Walmesly (Hollins House), also other landed proprietors, a doctor, several teachers and a mine propreitor.

1861 Residents include a magistrate, constable, four landed prorietors and four cotton manufacturers, a mine proprietor, ten teachers and a hairdresser.

1871 Occupations include : three surgeons, two vicars, two curates, two industrial mine holders, three landed proprietors, five manufacturers and five merchants (first mention). Also two civil engineers, two solicitors, thirteen teachers and a boarding school owner.

1881 Entries include landowner Thomas Isherwood, an Ironmaster, a chemistry lecturer at Manchester University and fifteen teachers, amongst others.

1891 Lists twenty-eight teachers. Professional class has grown to thirty five people.
