Numerous newspaper cuttings relating to river wall collapse on 21st Dec 1991 at Town Street, Marple Bridge and its reconstruction and reopening twelve months later with its effect on the local community and businesses.
July 1991 : Inspectors found that rock below the road had been worn away by the fast flowing river and the 100yd stone wall running the length of Town Street had moved an inch towards the river.
Aug 1991 : Engineers close road to prevent a slide; fear that crack may damage houses
Oct 1991 : The Council is to pay £700,000 to repair a wall which props up Town Street
24 Aug 1991 : Floods sweep away wall. Freak weekend weather caused a nightmare when part of Town Street finally slid into the River Goyt at around 6.30pm on Saturday, 21 Dec, leaving a gaping hole in the road.
Feb 1992 : Work starts next week on £1m repair. Traders push their case for compensation.
Mar 1992 : Eight workmen narrowly escaped following a new wall collapse at Marple Bridge
Sep 1992 : The wall collapse in Town Street has forced the closure of shop number eight
Dec 1992 : Town Hall workers sent to finish road repairs after original contractor went bust
Dec 1992 : Year of suffering for traders comes to an end
July 1993 : Village marooned by a massive sewer replacement scheme on Longhurst Lane
Nov 1993 : Mellor and Marple Bridge linked again
