Collection of newspaper cutting relating to crime & misfortune in the Marple Area from 1764 to 1999 from numerous publications including the Devizes & Wiltshire Gazette dated Thursday 20th January 1831 published in the Manchester Herald, reporting on a "Supposed Murder at Marple" after Mr Clayton had received an anonymous letter giving details of how the person called Nadin whose body was found in the River Goyte was murdered and not drowned as originally thought.
Numerous other cuttings reporting more common place crimes in pockets in chronlogical order.
1764 - 1849 : Crimes relate to theft/attempted theft of cloth, money, iron, clerical surplices, flour, potatoes; assault; embezzlement; damage to property; arson; debt; desertion/escape from apprenticeship/service/custody; threatening language; threatening behaviour towards local mills and their owners (1842).
Misfortunes include suicide, loss of cash, fatalaties (4) at work, fire at factory, miners' crash (but survival) down 45yd shaft; severe machine injury to 13 yr old mill employee.
1850 - 1899 : Crimes relate to: burglary, theft and robbery; assault; murder; criminal damage; drunkenness and licensing breaches; illegitimacy-related matters; horse driving offences; fraud; indecent exposure; domestic abuse; perjury; debt.
Misfortunes include: adult deaths by drowning (14), in colliery and other industrial settings (7); by suicide (3); child deaths in domestic (4) and industrial (3) settings; non-fatal industrial accidents; fires; collision of goods' trains; collapse of property; flood and landslip damage; pony and trap accident.
1900 - 1936 : Crimes relate to: drunkenness and licensing breach; assault; flagrant immorality at Marple Camp; manslaughter where car driver caused death of 3 men.
Misfortunes include: death in brewery; disappearance of two men, both presumed drowned; two car crashes; farming injury; injury to boy kicked by horse, hyena at Marple Station.
1937 - 1992 : Crimes relate to: assault; theft/burglary/robbery; driving; drugs; sex offences; false accounting/fraud; gun incidents; sale of substandard goods.
Misfortunes include : canal boat fire; drug death; car accident; escape of chemical fumes from smelting works. 1962 Boy killed falling down minshaft.
1993 : Crimes relate to: theft/robbery/burglary cases; assault; fraud; drunkenness/breach of peace; breach of rabies law; drugs; sex offences; sale of substandard goods.
Misfortunes include: fire, car accidents; gas explosion; property collapse; river fall; death (cycling accident, drowning, drugs); fall of cow into septic tank.
NB Some misfortunes had positive outcomes with victims successfully rescued from danger, often in acts of bravery.
1994 : Crimes relate to :theft/robbery/burglary; assault; fraud; youth c rime; illegal tree-felling.
Misfortunes include: squirrel attack on pensioner; car accidents and some associated deaths; sinking of anglers' fishing boat; oil pollution of River Goyt; discovery of human skull.
1994 : Crime : Chris Little Shooting.
1995 - 1996 : Crimes relate to : assault; drug possession; driving offences; theft/robbery/burgla.ry; arson.
Misfortunes include pest infestation;car accident death; canoeing death; fall injury.
1997 onwards: Crimes relate to assault, robbery, theft, robbery, vandalism, manslaughter, vandalism, driving and drugs offfences.
Numerous other cuttings reporting more common place crimes in pockets in chronlogical order.
