Description

Folder containing over 150 pages of photocopies from two Scrap Books compiled by Miss Flora Buck of Field House, Marple a member of the Red Cross V.A.D. with newspaper cuttings from 1914 -1919 for Brabyns Military Hospital with photographs of staff and soldiers.
Volume 1. covers Nov 1914 to Dec 1915 and Volume 2. 1916 onwards.

Patients were sent to Marple from Manchester Second General Western Hospital on Whitworth Street, usually having reached there by ambulance train from Southampton. The newspaper articles in the scrap book report on weekly events at Brabyns Red Cross Hospital, which nurses were on duty, which soldiers had arrived, giving their names and their injuries and who had been discharged, with news of them after they had returned to active service. Appeals were made for a variety of items from cars to well worn old shoes for those with trench foot. Thirty Canadian horses arrived in Marple to be stabled in the outbuildings at the Jolly Sailor. They were to be broken to saddle and harness there to prepare them for the work they would do on the plains of France and Flanders. On 3rd July 1915 there is a report of the presumed death of Col. Frank Isherwood, a member of the Marple Hall family.
