1950s : Marple’s new library opened near the council offices in Memorial Park, costing £3,700 and containing 7,000 books
1970s : After 18 years it’s cheerio to Miss Lavinia Morfee, the librarian
1974 : Marple’s new £80,000 library has opened in Memorial Park
1991 : Book borrowers at Marple Library complained they couldn’t park as town hall staff use the car park
1992 : A mobile library is to replace smaller branches across the borough
1996 : Compstall battles to save their library – a council spokesman said that £10 million cuts have to be found for 1996-7
1996 : Cash shortfall could mean early closing for Stockport’s libraries
1997 : New mobile library will help the elderly – following Compstall Library’s closure last week
1998 : Miss Mary Marple, Marple Library cat died in July. She was a stray who walked in one day and had welcomed visitors for five years
2002 : Marple Library has a brand-new area equipped with computers and the new Word Works facility which is a collection of the latest paperbacks and hardbacks
