Original typed letter to Householders from Marple Urban District Council dated January 1939, giving notice of "Government Evacuation Scheme" and their responsibilities under the Civil Defence to give information of housing that could be available.
Photocopy of A3 document Pages 12 and 13 from unknown source giving report on arrangements for evacuees arriving at Marple on 1st and 2nd September 1939, the volunteers needed, welfare work and accommodation provided. 2819 evacuees were taken by omnibus from Marple station to four dispersal centres, two at Marple Methodist schools, one at Marple Bridge Congregational Hall and one at Windlehurst Methodist school. From there they were fed and taken to their billets. Those unsuitable for billeting due to their health were housed in three hostels, Manchester Cathedral Country Home, Mellor, Brentwood on Church Lane and Beechwood.
